Same Day, Different Fortune? Understanding Day Master and Ten Gods
You and a friend your age open your daily fortunes side by side. Your friend gets "sunny," and you get "rain." You were born in the same year and checked on the same day, so why the difference?
The secret lies in your day master (日干) and the ten gods (十星). Good Morning Fortune's daily fortune is built on exactly this principle.
In Saju, "You" Are Your Day Master, Not Your Zodiac Animal
Of the eight characters in a Saju (四柱) chart, the one that represents "you" is the top character of your birth day. This is called the day master.
There are 10 day masters. Gap (甲) and Eul (乙) are Wood, Byeong (丙) and Jeong (丁) are Fire, Mu (戊) and Gi (己) are Earth, Gyeong (庚) and Sin (辛) are Metal, and Im (壬) and Gye (癸) are Water. For example, if your day master is Yang Wood (甲木), you are seen as someone like a tall, straight tree. If it is Yin Water (癸水), you are seen as someone like gentle rain or morning dew.
Your zodiac animal is set by your birth *year*, so people the same age mostly share one. Your day master is set by your birth *day*, so even people the same age can have different ones.
Today's Energy, Which Changes Daily: The Day Pillar
Every date has its own stem-branch pair too. If today is a Gap-Ja (甲子) day, tomorrow is Eul-Chuk (乙丑), then Byeong-In (丙寅), and so on, completing one full cycle every 60 days. This is called the day pillar (日辰). The Korean expression for a rough day, "the day's pillar is fierce," comes from this idea.
When Your Day Master Meets the Day Pillar: The Ten Gods
The ten gods describe what role today's day pillar plays for your day master, sorted into ten types. Grouped simply, they look like this:
- Peer and Rival (比肩·劫財): Energy like your own. Friends, colleagues, competitors
- Eating God and Hurting Officer (食神·傷官): Energy you create. Expression, talent, a way with words
- Indirect and Direct Wealth (偏財·正財): Energy you manage. Money, results, a sense of reality
- Indirect and Direct Officer (偏官·正官): Energy that keeps you in line. Work, responsibility, rules
- Indirect and Direct Resource (偏印·正印): Energy that supports you. Study, documents, help from elders
For example, if today's day pillar is Direct Wealth (正財) for you, it is a good day to steadily gather money and results. If it is Hurting Officer (傷官), your ideas may sparkle, but you should watch what you say.
That's Why Your Fortune Differed from Your Friend's
Even on the same day, your friend's day master and yours are different. So today's day pillar might be Direct Resource (正印, support) for your friend and Indirect Officer (偏官, pressure) for you. It is like the same rain falling: a welcome shower for a tree, but unwelcome for a fire.
Every morning, Good Morning Fortune reads the relationship between your day master and today's day pillar, and shows the day's flow as weather, such as sunny, cloudy, or rainy. Check what kind of weather has arrived for you today. ☀️
