What Is Saju? A Simple Guide to Korean Astrology
Saju (사주) is the traditional Korean astrology system, often called K-astrology. It turns the year, month, day and hour of your birth into four pillars — eight characters in total — and reads your nature and the flow of your luck from them.
Saju and Palja: four pillars, eight characters
Saju literally means "four pillars": the pillars of your birth year, month, day and hour.
Each pillar has an upper character (a Heavenly Stem) and a lower character (an Earthly Branch), so a full chart has eight characters. Koreans call this palja, "the eight characters" — and saying someone has "good palja" means they were born lucky.
Saju vs. Chinese BaZi and Western astrology
Saju shares its roots with Chinese BaZi (八字), the Four Pillars of Destiny, and uses the same stems, branches and calendar. Korean Saju has its own tradition of interpretation and is part of everyday culture in Korea — from New Year fortunes to couples checking their compatibility.
Unlike Western astrology, which centers on your sun sign, Saju looks at the balance of the five elements across all eight characters, and at how each day's energy meets your own.
The five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water
Every character in your chart belongs to one of five elements. Which elements are strong or missing, and whether they support or challenge each other, shapes your temperament and the themes of your life.
The day master and the ten gods: how a daily fortune works
The upper character of your birth day is your day master (일간) — the character that represents you.
Each day also has its own pillar. How that day's energy relates to your day master falls into one of ten patterns, called the ten gods (십성). That is why two people can have very different days on the same date.
Korean zodiac animals vs. your full Saju
Your zodiac animal is only the lower character of your birth year — one character out of eight. It shows a broad trend shared by everyone born that year, while your full Saju is uniquely yours.
In Saju, the zodiac year changes at Ipchun (around February 4), not at the Lunar New Year. Explore the twelve animals in Korean Zodiac.
